Hashimoto’s Hair Loss: Why It’s Happening and How to Stop It
Is your hair constantly falling out?
I know and understand just how devastating this feels because I’ve been there many times in my own journey.
You’ve probably been told “it’s just your thyroid.” or “Take this medication and it will fix it” only to keep ending up with clumps of hair falling out in the shower.
I’ve had many times when I dreaded washing my hair because I was terrified of the clumps I would see come out.
Here are the most common culprits behind Hashimtos hair loss:
Blood sugar imbalances
Nutrient defeciencies
Poor scalp health
Toxic hair care products
Over-exercising
Environmental toxins (mold, heavy metals, etc.)
Leaky gut & gut infections
Birth control & other pharmaceuticals
Trauma, Stress, and Nervous system dysregulation
The good news is, you don’t have to live with hair loss forever.
Here are a few of my favorite tools for growing back your hair.
1. Prioritize Protein
If you find yourself with hair loss, it’s often because your body isn't getting protein throughout your day. If you find yourself “too busy to eat” or skipping meals, your body can’t grow hair because it’s prioritizing survival.
Many women aren’t getting enough protein in their diets especially for breakfast causing their hair to fall out and energy crashes in the afternoon. Aim for at least 100 grams of protein daily to keep you hair growing and energy levels stable.
If you’d like some examples of high protein meals, you can download my free 3 day Hashimotos Energy Meal Plan here or get the exact roadmap I teach my clients inside The Hashimotos Energy Blueprint.
2. Address Nutrient Deficiencies
Environmental toxins, stress, and certain medications like birth control can deplete essential vitamins and minerals needed for hair growth. As a result, this can often deplete B vitamins. The most common deficiency that I often see correlated with hair loss are methylated B vitamins. Not all B vitamins are created equal. Many women are taking a non-methylated form of B vitamins that their bodies are not able to process.
I recommend taking 1 methylated B complex capsule in the morning with a high protein breakfast to optimize your hair growth.
Other hair loss deficiencies can include zinc, copper, selenium, and iron. These are all optimal for thyroid health. I like using a bioavailable form of these nutrients in this Desiccated Grass-Fed Beef Liver Capsules (code: Hashimotos10).
3. Scalp Care
Your scalp health is important for your hair follicles to grow. Toxic shampoos, conditioners, and poor gut health can all contribute to poor scalp health.
After a few weeks of consistently using Act + Acre’s Stem Cell Thick + Full Hair Care System (code: Hashimotos), I noticed re-growth, less shedding and my hair feeling stronger.
Here are some other benefits to using the Think + Full Hair Care System:
Promotes fuller-looking, thicker hair & stronger roots
Scalp hydration and relief from dryness/itchiness
Supports a healthy scalp environment by improving scalp elasticity
Can reduce shedding over time
I was never someone who prioritized my scalp until I discovered this line, but my hair has been loving it!
4. Red Light Therapy
Red light therapy or scientifically known as — photobiomodulation is backed by research that uses wavelengths of red and infrared light directly to your skin and cells.
Benefits include:
Improves skin health
Reduces pain + inflammation
Improves thyroid function + regenerates thyroid tissue
Boosts your immune system
Can reduce TPO antibodies
Improves sleep + emotional well-being
For hair growth, I recommend shining the Lumebox red light device directly on your scalp and head (about 6 inches away) daily for 10-15 minutes. This can help stimulate the hair follicles and repair the tissues to grow your hair.
5. Phototherapy Patches
Phototherapy patches have a patented technology that uses your own body’s infrared light to stimulate it’s stem cells. When applied to the body, they stimulate the CHK-CU peptide which is amazing for growing your hair, producing your skin’s collagen, and nail growth.
I wear my x39 phototherapy patch on the top of my spine daily for 12 hours during the day when I wake up and take it off before I go to bed. I also make sure to make sure I’m properly hydrated while wearing this with minerals and electrolytes.
I noticed after just 30 days of wearing the x39 patch my hair is fuller, thicker, and healthier. My skin also looks clearer and my energy has increased. The other nice part about these patches is they do not interfere with any medication or supplements and they are so easy to add to your health routine.
6. Regulate Your Nervous System
Your hair is not essential for survival. So when your body has been stuck in survival mode after ongoing stress and trauma your hair is going to show you by falling out.
Everything from toxic relationships to toxic jobs can cause our body to be in survival mode. Many with Hashimotos have adapted survival coping mechanisms like people pleasing, over-giving, and self-sacrificing as a trauma response keeping the body sick which can lead to hair loss.
I love somatic exercises (link takes 10% off) for getting yourself out of fight or flight stress/anxiety cycles. These help you release stress that is stored inside your body. I’ve had many emotional releases from doing these exercises consistently.
